Day 2: Kratie – Stueng Treng – Ratanakiri (B/L/D)

Early morning after breakfast we drive to the northeast of Cambodia where we will stop at Stueng Treng for a journey break. We then continue to Bung Lung, Rattanakiri passing along the tropic forest. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, working in close partnership with the community-based ecotourism project DRIVE, we learn about the life of the Tompuan people on a walk with a local tribal guide.

We walk around the shores of stunning Yeak Loam Lake before walking through the forest to visit Tompuan farms and their nearby village. This is a great introduction to minority life in Ratanakiri and we encourage all visitors to experience it. Return to hotel. Enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Virachey's 'Tanop' 2-day Trek (B/L/D)

You assemble at the DutchCo's office/depot at 08.00 a.m. in Banlung. The departure time is 08.30 which gives you half an hour to organize your backpacks.

At 08.30 we leave by Motorbike*, car, minivan, or trekking truck northern direction to Voensai. In Voensai we take a small local boat that takes us a short distance upstream the Sesan River. Very shortly we reach the river mouth of the O' Lalai river. The O'Lalai River has its springs further to the north inside the Virachey NP. It's clean and unpolluted water.

This very beautiful natural small river with banks flanked with all kinds of vegetation. This driver will be used for boat transport to take you up to the Kok Lak/La Lai communities 7km upstream (approximately 40 min.)

Once you arrive at Tra village, we need to register at the village Chief's house. After that, we continue a little further north by boat until we go ashore at the east bank of the O'Lalai River.

We start walking through a variety of landscapes. Patches of forests alternate with rice paddy fields. Some giant trees dot the small patches of forest. Around noon we'll have lunch at a small farmhouse

The further north you get, the denser the forest. Soon we'll enter the primary forest. It goes a little uphill. During the trek, we take regular breaks to enjoy the surroundings and to rest a little bit. We'll arrive at the campsite around 4 pm. Your guide will start boiling some water for coffee or tea, while you can refresh in a nearby stream. The hammocks will be tied and the campsite prepared for the night. You can enjoy a nice dinner at the campfire.

The Night Hike (Option)

Armed with a flashlight, we take a small hike around the campsite. What we are looking for are small nocturnal animals. On quite some occasions we've spotted some Lorys Pigys (a very small primate) and some Civets (small jungle cats). You can find them in all layers of the tree canopy. We saw some deer as well. Though the chance to see wildlife during the trek is fairly small, the chances increase during the night hike. Even if we don't see any wildlife, the atmosphere during a night hike is definitely more exciting.

Day 4: Banlung (B/L/D)

Today you will rise early and enjoy witnessing how the crickets and other insects get silent, and the birds taking over the orchestra. Breakfast is prepared while you enjoy your hot coffee or tea. Around 8.30 you leave the campsite. You continue south. At the end of the trek, you might recognize some farmhouses you've seen before. But because now you are facing south that will give you a completely different view. Early noon you get back to Tra Village.

Here your guide prepares lunch and in the meantime, you are free to venture out into the village. From here you go by boat back to Voensai.

And here is the same thing. Now that you are traveling south you experience a different boat trip than before. In Voensai transport is waiting for you to take you back to Banlung on a 45-minute trip. The appropriate arrival time in Banlung is around 4 p.m.

Day 5: Rattanakiri – Kratie (B/L/D)

Breakfast. We return to Kratie by 4x4wd. Enrooted we visit local villages. Once we arrive Kratie takes a ferry to Koh Trong. Koh Trong is a beautiful quiet island opposite the riverfront of Kratie Town, an almighty sandbar in the middle of the river. No cars, but carts, smiling peasants, craggy fishermen, and a rich soil that man turned into an orchard, Koh Trong is a small paradise. It is a short ferry ride between town life and a slice of Cambodia’s rural ways.

Day 6: Kratie – Kampong Cham – Phnom Penh (B/L/-)

Breakfast at the hotel or local restaurant; Morning we visit a local market before heading back to Phnom Penh. Drive to Kampong Cham and visit Rubber Plantation and production along the way.

After lunch at a local restaurant in Kampong Charm, we will visit Nokor Bachey temple; It is located 2.2 kilometers from Kampong Cham provincial town along National Road 7, about 122 kilometers northeast of Phnom Penh. The temple was built in the middle of the 11th century, during the reign of Suryavarman II and King Ouphey, and dedicated to Brahmanism. The temple is about 200 meters inside the gate. The site is accessible to almost all types of vehicles.

The famous place of Nokor Bachey Temple, Kampong Cham is a wonderful place to visit in the country of Cambodia. Continue the trip to Phnom Penh.
