Tonle Sap Lake Exploration
The Great Tonle Sap Lake (Boeung Tonle Sap), one the main natural wonder of Cambodia, important ecological hotspot for a freshwater in Asia during a wet season and UNESCO designated biosphere. Its combined lake and river system in Cambodia, that supposes to be the richest fishing lake in the World.
Unique ecological hotspot, The Tonle Sap, which flow changes direction twice in a year and lake itself expands and shrinks by four times depend on a season. Approximately during a monsoon rains it grows from 2700 square km to 16 000 square km that provides a breeding ground for the fish, birds and all rich ecosystem of Cambodia.
Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere, it's one of the most productive fishing Lakes in the World, able to support over 3 million Cambodians and provide over 75% of Cambodia`s annual inland fish catch, as well as 60 % of Cambodians` protein intake. Local population adapted to the unique ecology of the lake life, built a floating villages and stilted houses.
Truly a natural wonder it is easily reached from Siem Reap, as it lies less than 15 km South from a home town of ancient Angkor Complex and there are several ways to see wildlife and way of local day by day life in this rich ecosystem.
